Refuge

Refugio

Every living thing needs a place where it belongs.

Refuge is protection from chaos, not the absence of it. A violent storm of slashing rain and thrashing wind may be unavoidable, but we still choose whether to stand exposed or step beneath the eaves. Refuge is wherever you are free to lay down your burdens, if only for a little while.

Every living thing knows the rhythm of refuge. Birds return to familiar branches after flight. Deer form bedding in dense thickets. Even flowers close their petals at dusk. Refuge is not an escape from life, but how life itself renews.

This card invites you to notice where your body knows it is safe enough to soften. Perhaps it is a particular room, a familiar landscape, the presence of someone you trust, or a practice that brings you back to yourself. Spend a little time there without asking anything of yourself. Notice what becomes quieter when you stop bracing against the world. Where do you most easily remember yourself? Refuge may not change what waits beyond its shelter, but it can return you to the steadiness from which you meet it.

Reflection Practice

Spend fifteen quiet minutes in a place where your body naturally relaxes. Notice what changes without trying to change anything. Pay attention. Ask yourself: What makes this place feel like refuge? Consider how you might carry that feeling into the rest of your life.

Journal Prompt
